Recipes

Trying out a recipe is one of the best ways to get in touch with the history and culture of the food, not to mention enjoying its delicious taste thereafter.  This is a growing collection of Singapore traditional recipes.  Some are familiar favourites, others are forgotten with time.  In this collection, I have also included recipes which may be more recent but are distinctly innovative Singaporean creations.  A fine example of this will be "Yu Sheng", the Chinese New Year Raw Fish Salad.  Have fun in your kitchen!

Ikan bilis goreng kachang - an excellent snack served in many bars in the 1950s...  (Malayan)

Kow Lak Ar (Braised Duck with chestnut stuffing) - A Teochew restaurant classic in the 1950s... (Chinese - Teochew)

Oh nee (Taro pudding) - a popular Teochew dessert  (Chinese - Teochew)

Yu Sheng (Raw fish salad) - A Chinese New Year dish that only gained popularity in Singapore in recent decades  (Chinese - Singapore)

Nyonya kueh - Gading Galoh (Glutinous rice with coconut milk and pandan custard)  - a nyonya snack or dessert that can be found in many bakeries or hawker stalls today  (Nyonya)
